Last month, a young lady told me that, 3 years ago, she was in a car accident while she was driving with her teen aged brother. She sustained very minor injuries. Her brother was killed. The guilt she felt, and the shame of “being responsible” for the popular boy’s death, had literally driven her from even attending the church she was raised in.

Last week, a woman told me that she was sexually abused by her father as a child. Within 5 minutes of the start of that conversation, she was in tears. Her disdain for him was quite apparent.

Yesterday, a woman welled-up with tears as she expressed shame for not having reported her ex-spouse 20 years ago when he sexually abused her daughter from a previous marriage. She had just learned that he had sexually abused others since then and the guilty feeling was eating away at her.

Last night, as we ministered healing to a college girl, we inquired about her need to forgive others. She could not readily recall anything but an admittedly silly school girl situation. During prayer, we asked the Holy Spirit to show her if there were any others who needed her forgiveness. Within a few minutes, she realized that perhaps she DID need to forgive her father for “not being there” for her emotionally. God was already at work.

Years ago, I was handed a cassette tape on healing. After listening to the tape, I prayed that God would reveal who had hurt me so that I could forgive them.

He did.

SELF-TALK

I’m convinced that we can train ourselves to practice better “self-talk.” If it’s true that we are speaking that many negative words within our own heads, how can we expect any good fruit to be born of that activity?

Before you dismiss this as some sort of New Age mumbo-jumbo, consider that each of us has, at one time or another, said to ourselves, “I am SO stupid!” or declared of yourself, “What a dork!”

Things of that nature.

Maybe it was someone else who programmed you with THEIR words. Stupid, lazy, fatso, loser…or worse.

Perhaps society has labeled you in a more polite sort of way… divorcee, illegitimate, alcoholic, depressed…and you’ve even used those words to describe yourself.

You get the picture. God is famous for changing the names of His people. If what you're calling yourself is NOT what God refers to you as, stop agreeing with the world. Learn what the Father says about you!

If not, you may indulge in negative self-talk. King David was talking to Himself when he wrote, “Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God...,” Psalm 42:5. By talking to his “soul,” he was addressing his mind, his will and his emotions.

“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit,” Proverbs 18:21.

“… you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth…,” Proverbs 6:2.
